Looking Forward in 2021

Having spent a bit of time looking back, I’m ready to look forward into 2021.  This year, I’ve got a whole pile of resolutions that I’m excited about, and even something that’s not a resolution for just this year, but something I’m looking forward to for multiple years to come.  I think over the years I’ve well-tuned what I choose to be resolutions and what I choose to just be things I may or may not do over the course of the year, and this year’s list is overall pretty safe.  They are things that I’ve planned a bit ahead on, and things that are very achievable this next year without going too far out of my way.  On the one hand, I might ask, why bother if it’s not a challenge; on the other hand…  …I’m not sure I really need a challenge this year, as there will be plenty going on without anything extra.

With that said, here’s what I’ve got:

Assembly Backlog

It’s back!  Not that it ever left, but I’ve got a lot on my list this year; almost twice what I had last year.  Still, as always, this is going to be my most fun resolution.  Having stuff to build is always a lot of fun and getting through all the models on my backlog is going give me something to work toward all year.  I’m always at a bit of a loss about where to put the models that I bought in the previous year, but arrive the year I’m working through my backlog, but we’ll see what happens this year – this accounts for a lot more Warcaster, which I’m hoping to put together, so we’ll see how it goes.

Sell Off Models I Don’t Plan On Using

This year my “reserve” list is something a bit different.  Rather than just not having them on my to-build list, they’re going on a list of things that I want to sell off this year.  As it happens, I have a few models that I’m not actually planning on using.  Some of them are assembled, but most of them are still in their boxes, so I should be able to sell them off without too much trouble – at least, that’s my hope.  We’ll see how this goes – I’m pretty hesitant to resolve to something that’s outside my control, but I’m sure there’s always another site I could attempt to offload them on (if my friends and eBay both fail).

Build a Terrain Table

This is a resolution I’ve put a bit of planning into, and I am the most excited about this year.  I backed a few terrain projects in 2020, so this year I’m going to put together a full 6’x4′ topper for my game table that is fully modeled and painted terrain.  The first table is going to be a winter themed table: I’ve already got a few sample pieces put together, and I’m ready to move into full production.  This has the biggest risk of falling behind, so is something I’m going to have to work on throughout the year (no sprint at the end) which should be fun.

Finish a Campaign Game

This year, I really want to finish one of the campaign games I’ve got going.  I like this one a lot this year because I’ve got Brooke on board, and we have game nights planned.  Still, the games I’ve got in progress are big, so this is going to be a bit of a concerted effort.  Right now, we’re in the midst of Etherfields, which, so far, has been a pretty awesome game, though it definitely falls into the big category.  After that, we’ve got Kingdom Death: Monster, Apocrypha, and hopes of starting on Folklore: The Affliction.  For myself, I’ve got the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords in progress by myself and Betrayal Legacy with some other friends, so there’s definitely going to be a lot of campaign gaming in this house for a while.

Create/Implement a Box Organization Scheme

While I’ll be playing a lot of board games this year, I also want to create and implement some box organization for some of my games.  This isn’t necessarily going to be a single scheme to organize all my board games, but I want to do some box organization on a few games that have started to get a bit unwieldy.  First and foremost will be Betrayal at the House on the Hill – I’ve managed to get both the core game and the legacy edition in one box, but it needs a bit of structure to keep all the components well-organized.  Next though will likely be Villainous, Kingdom Death, and Folklore.

Paint Some Board Game Models

I usually stray away from having painting goals on my resolutions because, typically, I don’t really enjoy painting that much, so I do it only when it suits me.  This year, I have a goal to my painting though, as I want to try to implement a sundrop-like paint scheme that achieves two things: (a) is doable by me, so it must be easy and low-friction, and (b) achieves a moderate improvement in the look of the models.  I’ve been looking at zenithal undercoats with semi-transparent inks/washes/dips so I’ll likely play around with this a bit this year.  My goal will be to actually implement this on at least one board game with miniatures this year (i.e. Talisman, Myth, the Others, Etherfields, Anachrony, or something else).

Make 25 Different Bread Varieties

This new year’s day marks the third year of my making bread, so I want to do something a bit more this year.  Instead of just making whatever bread variety strikes my fancy, I’m going to track my different bread varieties and make sure that I get at least 25 different varieties baked.  With approximately 36 opportunities this year, 25 varieties is doable without being stressful if ingredients are a problem.

Special Bonus: Multi-Year Goal

This year, for the first time, I’m making a multi-year goal to watch through all the Star Trek that I have in chronological order (sans the Kelvin timeline).  I’m making this a multi-year goal because I don’t want to spend all my time this year watching Star Trek, but I do want to eventually complete it, so I added it to the sidebar at the right for easy tracking.

And that’s it!  It’s going to be a fun year, with lots of resolutions that I’m excited about, so there’s a lot to look forward to!
