This Winter, a friend of mine at The Rogue’s Roost is running a narrative Warhammer league.  I was excited for this league because it set out to be new-person friendly and because we would be creating our own character model over the course of the league.  I was also excited about the prospect of playing some 8th edition Warhammer, as, so far, I like it a bit better than 7th (that’s not to say it’s perfect, but on-the-whole I like it more).

When the league was announced, I decided I wanted to play and go all-in on my usual playstyle – run as many walkers (read: dreadnoughts and knights) as possible.  This spawned my first 500 point list:

My character for the league is Jarleiv Liðulfr.  At this point in the league he’s just a vanilla Chaplain Venerable Dreadnought, though my goal is to upgrade him throughout the league to be a support/leadership character that helps out my other Dreadnoughts and (hopefully) Knights.

My first match of the league was against Tyranids, and I can say I was extremely nervous going into this match.  The main contributing factor is that I honestly wasn’t sure how well my list would perform – I was only bringing three serious models (the others were filler), and I hadn’t played a serious game of Warhammer 8th ever.  My opponent was very gracious to me in helping make sure I wasn’t breaking any rules or forgetting anything critical, and was generally a lot of fun to play.

I barely managed to pull out a victory in this match, mostly attributed to some decent shooting from my servitor (who would have thought!) and the melee prowess of Jarleiv (though, he had only one hit point left at the end!).  It was a very close match and a ton of fun – a good first match!
