Looking Forward in 2022

This year, my New Year’s posts are going to be a bit out of order, as I haven’t really been spending a lot of time writing.  In fact, I just started taking the bus again last week, so we’ll see how that goes.  Still, I did make New Year’s Resolutions this year, so I feel like I ought to go over them so I know whether I succeeded or not with them at the end of the year.

That being said, here we go:

Assembly Backlog

As usual, this one is at the top, without too much fanfair.  This year might be the smallest assembly backlog I’ve ever had, but it’s stuff I want to get done nonetheless.  The biggest section this year is Warcaster, as I have a few warjacks to put together, and magnetizing all their little guns and stuff takes a fair bit of focused work.  I’m finding that Privateer Press’s WarmaHordes release schedule has been exceptionally sparse the last few years, and this year wasn’t really any different.  I ended up picking up some alternate sculpts just to have something to build for my main factions this year.  Notably missing this year is Warhammer – I don’t think I even looked at any Warhammer models this year, much less had my eye on any to pick up.  I think a large part of that has been the lack of any Thanksgiving games in a while, but also just feeling like my armies are basically where I want them.

Campaign Games

I almost didn’t put this one on my list, just because I put it on there last year.  Brooke and I did finish one game last year, but there are still more that we want to get through.  I’m hopeful that we’ll finish Kingdom Death: Monster (that’ll be a first for me) and start on Folklore: The Affliction, but I’d also like to finish Betrayal if we can get the rest of the group together again.

That being said, for this resolution, one game is enough, because I want to play some non-campaign games this year – Hopefully, we’ll get to play some WarmaHordes on the new table, and I’d like to see Fireteam Zero hit the table at least once.

Technology Upgrades

This resolution is a bit of a catchall for a number of different tech things I want to do this year, both around the house and on my blog.

For the house stuff, my server needs an upgrade.  It’s been a while since I rebuilt the kernel, and it’s got some rough edges due to cruft build-up and out-of-date packages.  Since I got a new computer last year, I want to actually replace my server with new hardware and rebuild it from the ground up.  I also want to get a new RAID in to hold all of my 3d models – my old RAID is holding just fine, but some additional room for growth would be ideal.

Next, I want to build up some network enabled things in the house.  My OctoPi server is actually running on a pretty old Pi, and doesn’t really perform as well as I’d like, so I want to upgrade that to a new one.  Once I do that, I want to repurpose the old Pi to run a PiHole server for the house – I’m really a fan of network ad-blocking and I’m excited to see what kinds of filtering and other benefits I can get from that.

Lastly (though not necessarily latest in the year), I want to do a blog update.  The template I’ve been using for the last few years doesn’t get updated anymore, and this has caused some formatting oddities in my blog, especially on the sidebar.  This might just be some CSS tweaks that are needed, but I’m tempted to get a new theme and rebuild my theme as a child to ensure that I’m getting the latest-and-greatest as well as knock out any cruft.  Along with that, I want to rebuild my avatar icon – Back when I build it, most avatars were 64 pixels square or smaller.  It turns out, they tend to be bigger these days, and the old image shows that it doesn’t scale up well, so it’s time to redraw that.

Dental Health

The last couple of years, I’ve let my dental health slip a bit.  I was really bummed when my dentist stopped accepting my insurance, and I haven’t made the effort to go find a new one yet.  This year, I want to do that, as well as make sure that I get in for a cleaning.  Along with the dentist situation, my home-care dental habits have slipped as well, so this year I’m going to push a bit harder to make sure that my teeth cleaning habits get back on track.

Encourage-Mints

At work, I have a little script that kicks out an encouraging or just pithy quote or saying every Tuesday.  Unfortunately, over the last year or so, I’ve had a harder time getting this populated with new content (and, in fact, it’s been empty for a while), so this year, I want to make a goal to make sure there’s a new quote all year.

This one falls into the “dangerous” category of having to do it all year, and it could fall down at the end, but, luckily, it’s got queuing built in, so as long as I can get 52 Encourage-Mints in there, and get them in on time, I should be good.

That’s it for my goals for this year, but…

Multi-Year Goals

…I’ve got two multi-year goals to talk about!  These are all things that I think are going to be fun to do, but don’t fit neatly into a single year – either because of their size or complexity.  But, they’re also things I want to track, just to see how far along I am at any given point.

Star-Trek

Last year, Brooke and I began a trek to watch all of the Star Trek series in chronological order.  This year, I plan on continuing on with this and hope to finish it.  There may be some new Star Treks coming out this year, but I don’t plan on adding them necessarily – we may watch them (or not), but this has been an interesting snapshot in time of what’s out there for Star Trek.

WarmaHordes

This year, I want to add a new goal to play through each of the casters and themes for my factions.  This is a big one, and is going to involve a lot of games, but should be fun.  There are a few casters I’ve never played, but definitely a lot more that I’ve never played this edition.  Also, I’ve never been a huge fan of theme lists, so this will get me thinking about them a lot more, and probably get around to even using them on occasion.

I’ve got fewer total goals this year than previous years, so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes!
