Looking Back at 2018 – Resolutions

Alright – it’s time for me to take a look at the things that I said I was going to do this year and see whether I accomplished those things.  For those who haven’t joined me before, each of the six items below gets a simple pass/fail, and then I look at my overall average to see how I did.

Here it goes, in the order that I put them on my list:

Write a piece of (short) fiction – FAIL

This one was supposed to be a gimme, as I was supposed to be writing fiction as part of the Warmahordes league this summer.  While I was able to get the intro fiction done in time, pretty much everything else about that league was last-minute, and the fiction writing fell off entirely.  While I could have picked this back up later in the year, but as the year rolled on, this one seemed less and less important to me..

Read 101 short stories – PASS

This is the resolution I was most happy about when I completed it – I managed to read and listen to 101 short stories in 101 days.  This is pretty cool to me as I love short stories and this was a ton of fun.  It was definitely a bit of a stretch, especially to do it in so short a period, but it was totally worth it.  I read a lot of good fiction, and just looking through the list makes me feel good.

Assembly backlog – PASS

This one also felt really good to get done as the end of the year rolled around.  All the models that I bought last year were assembled, as well as my primary backlog of other models (i.e. warmachine, hordes, warhammer 40k, etc).  Another great thing about this is that I actually sold my Tau, so even though I didn’t assemble them, they’re officially off my plate.

As an aside, as I was maintaining my backlog this year, I also tracked all the models I bought and all the models I assembled in total – this makes my sidebar an interesting piece of history as I can look at all the models I assembled this year, and it makes creating my assembly backlog for next year even easier <wink>.

Finish a computer game storyline – PASS

Near the beginning of the year, I finished Grim Dawn and I wrote about it, so I achieved what I set out to do here.  But…  …I never marked this one completed on my sidebar, because I kept thinking to myself that I would do more.  I’ve played through a couple of games since then, but nothing with a really deep story, and I wanted to take a really deep look into a deep game story.  As such, this is low pass, but a pass nonetheless.

House Projects – PASS

Looking back on the resolutions that improved my quality of life, this one is pretty high on the list.  It was good to do the house maintenance that was really needed, and also I’m glad I got the furniture from my family on the Western slope – it really has made a difference in my perception of my living space.  Also, getting my game room set up with a full set of shelves is really awesome – I finally have space for nearly all of my games and miniatures that’s a bit more stable in its organization.  I will mention that in terms of my game room, there still is some work left to be done, but it definitely looks better than it did.

It was also really important for me to get everyone who isn’t living with me moved out.  It probably doesn’t seem as important to those whose stuff I was holding on to, but for me…  …the peace of mind was really good.

Eye Doctor – PASS

This one was almost a gimme – I had it scheduled from the year before last when I went in, so it was pretty easy.  Luckily, there wasn’t much to be done except get some new lenses (same prescription), so the whole process was as straightforward as can be.

Verdict

Five out of six feels pretty good – it may be the best I’ve done since I started blogging about them.  Even if there is a low pass and a gimme in there, I’m still pretty happy with that.  I think it feels best because there were a lot of things that took a large part of the year, and staying focused on them really helped me get them done.  Further, the things that I got done really were things that I continued to believe in at the end of the year, and the little extra motivation helped get me to stick to it.
