Wait, What? Warhammer!

On Thursday, I played a game of Warhammer with Tim at Karl’s shop. At first, I was quite hesitant, because I got stomped so completely last time, but I put together a list with a lot of troops and hoped for an objective game.

An objective game is what I got, with three objectives scattered about, I was definitely looking for which ones I could take. Two were near the center of the table (one in a ruins area, and one on a hill), the last back toward the ruins in my deployment area.

The game started out good for me – I was able to take out his advanced deployed assassin, and a failed morale roll caused a unit of his troopers to run off the board. However, the early mid-game became problematic for me as he was able to shred through my infantry with some of his better guns shooting out of his tanks, and the force weapons from his grey knights.

My drop pod came in a bit early, but my scouts came in eventually and was able to take out his tanks, which was a boon. Also, Grimnar and his terminators were able to hold the center reasonably well – Coteaz attacked with his group, and Grimnar and crew cut him down with his lack of invulnerability save while his storm troopers fled. They were then shot at by more storm troopers leaving only Grimnar to rush into them and cut them down (which he was able to do).

The endgame for this match was a pair of grey hunters dukeing it out with a dreadnaught without a close combat weapon while my long fangs watched from the sidelines. On the other side of the map, my last couple of scouts were trying to kill a Grey Knight Purgation Squad (and not seeming to be able to make any headway either). Finally, on the last round of the game, a series of really lucky rolls made all the difference: The dreadnaught was able to kill one of my grey hunters, and the other one failed his morale check causing him to flee. He made the initiative check to break away from the battle, and ran seven inches back toward my side of the table, putting him in range of the objective. Since he was the only troop in range of an objective, I was able to win, only through sheer luck alone!

The original plan was to play a game under the new sixth edition rules (which didn’t happen), but it was still an entertaining game and the first time I’ve won in a really long time…
