Troy was my second target for Mean Girls Revenge, as he helped instigate the meme-flinging. I didn’t have to work very hard to get a movie for him, because he straight-up asked to borrow Dune. When pressed for which version of Dune he would prefer, he asked for both, so I lent him both the 1984 movie (starring Sting, Kyle MacLachlan, and Patrick Stewart, Freddy Jones…) as well as the 2000 sci-fi channel mini-series (starring William Hurt). Mean Girls Revenge Part 1 – Labyrinth
Having watched Mean Girls at the behest of a couple of my employees, it was time for me to get my revenge and assign them each a movie of mine to watch. Since Mean Girls wasn’t a terrible movie, I honestly went looking for something they each might of liked. Continue reading Mean Girls Revenge Part 1 – Labyrinth
Mean Girls
I recognized quite some time ago that my movie knowledge is exceptionally spiked – I saw a lot of movies in the early to mid-nineties, but almost nothing post 2000 when I went away to college, and then I had a stretch of not owning a TV nor having any money/desire to see movies in theatres when I went to grad school. So, when the memes started zinging around the office about a movie that came out over a decade ago, I got odd looks – it’s old so I must have seen it… …right?
Well, that’s how I ended up watching Mean Girls over my Christmas holiday. Continue reading Mean Girls
Krull
I recently bought a new TV, and decided it was time to watch Krull again. Most people who know me well know that Krull is my favorite movie of all time. To some, it may only be the run-of-the-mill fantasy-action schlock, but as I’ve experienced this adventure a number of times (both the movie and the book), I can’t help but attribute a certain amount of depth to the story, as every time I experience it, I notice more and different things.
After the jump, a few of my own thoughts as I watched it most recently. Continue reading Krull
Arrival
This weekend, I watched Arrival and I really enjoyed it. I keep trying to call it The Arrival, but that’s a different movie (with Charlie Sheen, and aliens with inverted knees.) Aside from that, Arrival was a great movie, and one I really enjoyed watching – a large part of it was the philosophy of the piece (which was downplayed a bit in the movie), but I also appreciated that it was willing to tell a sci-fi story without it being “action packed!” Pretty major spoilers as I delve into philosophy after the jump. Continue reading Arrival
Independence Day: Resurgence
I recently watched Independence Day: Resurgence with the full expectation of a hilariously bad sequel twenty years late. I picked it up from the $12.00 rack at Wal-Mart, which is about my threshold for “Huh, this movie could be bad.” While it wasn’t all bad, Independence Day: Resurgence suffered from a lot of issues which I’ll discuss after the break. Continue reading Independence Day: Resurgence
Gods of Egypt
I recently watched the entirety of Gods of Egypt with Cam on a bit of a whim. I say I watched it in its entirety because I caught the middle of it one night when I was in Washington DC about a year ago, and I was intrigued enough to pick it up when I saw it on DVD. What I was expecting when I picked it up was a total cheese-fest for the so-bad-its-good category. What I got instead was a movie that was actually pretty decent in the tone of the old Clash of the Titans movie. Continue reading Gods of Egypt
Humans and Households / Natural 1
When Jessa and I were sorting through our DVDs, I happened to check online to see if I could still get a copy of Gamers when I noticed that the Dead Gentlemen had put out another DVD – Humans and Households / Natural 1. Being unapologetic as I am about liking their stuff, I didn’t think twice about picking this one up. Continue reading Humans and Households / Natural 1
Sharknado
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Jessa and I watched Sharknado. The thought for watching this was to watch something that was “so bad it’s good” and have a good laugh. In this sense, Sharknado… …Disappoints? I guess, to be fair, it was “so bad it was ok”, but it never hit the point of being excellently bad (like The Core or Red). In our watch through, I noticed some things that differed between a “so bad it’s good” movie and “so bad it’s ok” movie for me, so I thought I would write about them. Continue reading Sharknado
Mad Max: Fury Road
I recently watched Mad Max: Fury Road with Jessa. I hadn’t seen it, but it was finally out on DVD in the bargain bin, and all of my friends said it was great and that I should watch it. I liked the old Mad Max movies, especially for a peek at a post-apocalyptic Australia… …A land-locked desert, not so unlike where I grew up.
But, this blog entry isn’t really going to be about Mad Max: Fury Road, though I will use it to epitomize my point. After watching it, Jessa turned to me and asked, “So, what did you think?”.
“Eh, It was alright”, I replied.
Jessa quipped right back, “Another glowing recommendation.” Continue reading Mad Max: Fury Road
