A while back, I had a discussion with our development team about significant figures. Specifically, the discussion centered around where they were going to go to lunch and when they were going to leave. Someone piped in with, “Right here, right now,” while another countered, “I wonder how many significant digits you should take for that to actually be true…” The first dev then stated, “First, you would need some units,” at which point I jumped into the conversation claiming, “Actually, I’m not sure that you do. Whether you are using AU or attometers, the number of significant digits should be the same.” Continue reading Are Significant Digits Unit Dependent?

Pathfinder ACG: Perils of the Lost Coast
Last week, I finished the first adventure in the Rise of the Runelords base set for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (not to be confused with the first adventure in the Rise of the Runelords adventure path for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.) At this point, our heroes have busted a brutal bandit leader, put down a poisoner, and blasted a black dragon back where he came. My deck lists and some tidbits after the jump: Continue reading Pathfinder ACG: Perils of the Lost Coast
Gods of Egypt
I recently watched the entirety of Gods of Egypt with Cam on a bit of a whim. I say I watched it in its entirety because I caught the middle of it one night when I was in Washington DC about a year ago, and I was intrigued enough to pick it up when I saw it on DVD. What I was expecting when I picked it up was a total cheese-fest for the so-bad-its-good category. What I got instead was a movie that was actually pretty decent in the tone of the old Clash of the Titans movie. Continue reading Gods of Egypt
Eclipse: Ships of the Line
A couple of weeks ago, I got the chance to playtest one of my game mods – Eclipse: Ships of the Line. The game was pretty good, and I got some ideas for how I might tighten up the gameplay a bit. Continue reading Eclipse: Ships of the Line
Humans and Households / Natural 1
When Jessa and I were sorting through our DVDs, I happened to check online to see if I could still get a copy of Gamers when I noticed that the Dead Gentlemen had put out another DVD – Humans and Households / Natural 1. Being unapologetic as I am about liking their stuff, I didn’t think twice about picking this one up. Continue reading Humans and Households / Natural 1
Starting Up Rise of the Runelords
I recently pulled out my copy of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – I’ve decided I’m going to work through this adventure path for my 2017 New Year’s Resolution to play through a campaign. It has 33 scenarios across 7 adventures, and my current plan is to blog my decklists and any notable encounters after each adventure. Continue reading Starting Up Rise of the Runelords
Galactic Patrol
Though it’s been a while, I just finished Galactic Patrol by E. E. “Doc” Smith. This was another entertaining addition to the series, and definitely had some great moments. However, I didn’t think it was as good as First Lensman. That’s not the reason that it took me longer to read though – that was more that I have spent less time reading in the last month, primarily due to the copious holidays, and because of how much writing I did at the tail end of the year. At any rate, my discussion of the book, along with some minor spoilers, follows. Continue reading Galactic Patrol
Playing Grim Dawn
I recently started playing Grim Dawn – a game based on the same engine as Titan Quest. I have been enjoying this game immensely – it reminds me of a combination of Titan Quest and Path of Exile and so hits all the right keys to make an enjoyable game for me. Continue reading Playing Grim Dawn
What Sci-Fi Universe Would You Not Live In?
Similar to last week, I have recently been asked, “Given any Sci-Fi Universe, which would you not want to live in?” This question, I think, is a bit more difficult than the last, because even dystopias can seem pretty good when you’re in the midst of them. However, a good dystopia has a caveat to the goodness, and asks the question, “What does it cost?” Continue reading What Sci-Fi Universe Would You Not Live In?
Arkham Horror LCG Box Organization
With the help of some friends, I recently convinced myself to pick up the Arkham Horror Living Card Game. I’ve played through a couple of the scenarios at this point, and it’s pretty enjoyable. It’s different enough from the Lord of the Rings LCG that I think I’ll enjoy doing at least one campaign of it. With The Dunwitch Legacy coming out, and having already picked up two copies of the core box and a couple of standalone adventures, I decided it was time to organize my box. Continue reading Arkham Horror LCG Box Organization
