It’s time once again to sit down and think through my resolutions for the next year. I’ve got a few more than normal this year, but most of them are a bit smaller (less combo-goals). There’s a couple that might be a little more difficult to measure, but we’ll see how it goes – It’s going to be the kind of thing that I’ll know it when it see it. Well, enough of the meta-talk, let’s get to it.
Assembly Backlog
At this point, this resolution should surprise absolutely no one. I buy a lot of models, and every year, end up with models that I bought but didn’t make time to assemble… …So I just make time to assemble them the following year. This year, there are a few things that I’m holding off on – either because I don’t want to rush it (Warlord Titan) or because I’m thinking about selling it (min-crates mostly). I thought I was doing pretty good this year, and the astute may notice that I didn’t buy a lot of Warmachine or Warhammer this year… …But I did buy a lot of Hordes, so I’ve got plenty of beasty things to build.
Design a Game
This is a resolution I’ve had on my list off-and-on throughout the last few years, but I do want to take the time to do some game design this year. As usual, it may be a mod for an existing game, or a whole new game, as long as it’s something with rules written to it. For this purpose, written rules is the important part – they may not be pretty or published, but they’re at least written.
Build a Game
This resolution is different from the above in that it doesn’t have to be any kind of original work – this just requires that I build some game components. This can either be upgraded components for an existing game, significant gameplay aides, or heck, if I get around to building a whole new game, it could be that. In any event, I’m hoping that spending some time at the Longmont TinkerMill or with my own new 3D printer will help with this one, so it should be fun.
Run a Role-Playing Game
There are a lot of times when I really miss role-playing. I don’t make a lot of time for it these days, and I don’t think I want to make a lot of time for it next year (unless I can build a regular routine from it), but I at least want to run a few sessions of something. Partly I want to run enough of a game so that Brooke can get a feel for what it’s all about, but also enough that I can get a story out of my system – if I can achieve these, I’ll consider this successful.
Read some Ebooks
Last year, I spent the time to organize my Ebook library, so this year I actually want to read a few of them. Technically one is enough to fulfill this resolution, but every time I’ve cracked open a volume of Designers and Dragons, it’s been really interesting, so I’m shooting to read through those if they keep my interest.
Make a New Thing
I’ve had some ideas kicking around for some new things that I want to make with my new 3D printer. This is going to be different than the “Build a Game” resolution above in that this must be more functional than artistic and will probably require some multi-material or electronics work to complete. Again, the TinkerMill shop may come in to play here, as it provides some new opportunities.
Create a New Routine
I’m a routine person – if I don’t have a routine for something, it’s not something I’m going to stick to. So, I’d like to build a routine to do something new in 2020 – I honestly don’t know what this might be, and measuring it may be a little tricky (how many times before it becomes routine?), but I’ll know it when I see it.
Restart an Old Routine
There have been a lot of shakeups the last few months, and I need to get some of my old routines back – walking, bussing to work, writing, or reading to name a few. This resolution is really about getting one or more of those back this year. As things settle back in, I want to be able to make time and build a routine around at least one of the things that I used to do, and will probably improve my overall health to boot.
