This fall, The Rogue’s Roost is running a Warmachine/Hordes narrative league, and, for the league, I’ll be playing the Grymkin.  I picked up the army box and The Child when they came out, so I have a few models to get rolling with, and I’ve proxied a few to get a better feel for what I should bring in the future.  The first couple of games I’ve played have been focused on The Child and my new character solo for the league.

My first match of the week was against Khador:

This battle took place in a small unnamed village in the Kovosk hills of Khador.  Kozlov heard that The Old Witch needed some information from him, and that he should go to these hills so that she might gain this information.  Kozlov brought only a couple of trusted warjacks, and Borris Petrov, a Man-O-War Kovnik that also brought along a Berserker – surely three warjacks would be enough to ward off any trouble on the road.  When he arrived at the village square, he found the village quiet; then, he saw the farmers, undead farmers, come in from the fields and the beasts emerge from the shadows of the buildings – the Grymkin were upon him.

Kozlov set his warjacks to receive the charge while Borris attempted to flank the army on the Northern end of the square.  The child responded by sending her Dread Rots to meet the Kovnik and using the Gorehound in a flanking maneuver of her own through the alleyway to the South.  When the perfect moment was upon them, both The Child and her Skin and Moans charged the Khadoran front lines, wrecking the Juggernaut and mangling most of the Destroyer.  Kozlov still had one trick up his sleeve though, and he charged right in to the monstrous Child, striking with all his focus.  Stunned, he found that it was not enough, and the horde overtook him leaving him beaten in the square.

Kovnik Petrov had survived the onslaught though, and pulled Kozlov back to the safety of a church.  He closed the door and barred it against the assault, but it never came.  Instead, the Grymkin withdrew, having achieved their goal.  Nearby, a crow took note of the battle and was pleased.

My second match of the week was a 2v2 match with Khador and against the Circle Orboros and Retribution of Scyrah.

Rumors of an dispelling rune drew many to the abandoned building outside of old Castle Tzepesci.  Here, so it was said, the wizard Taramathis was working on a rune that would dispel an enchantment placed on another object.  With an understanding that the flagstone in the valley should not be removed, the Circle Orboros allied themselves with the Iosian elves to protect the knowledge, but they couldn’t understand the power arrayed against them with the combined Khador and Grymkin force.

Having proven themselves where Kozlov had failed, Sorscha and Pretrov arrived with warjacks in tow and The Child and Adrik at their back.  Dawnlord Vyros and Bradigus were ready for them though, and, unseen, Rhain, the Dark Star had already flanked the attacking force.

Rhain jumped out of her hiding place, going for the quick kill of Kovnik Petrov.  Seeing her man go down, and his marauder go autonomous, Sorscha decided it was her turn to strike.  Focusing her Destroyer on the Dawnguard, she disrupted them just enough for her strike.  With the Northern wind carrying her, she rushed across the battlefield bringing her arcane power to bear, and ended Vyros’s threat with her magical hammer, Frostfang.

Seeing Sorscha exposed, The Child sent her army in to attack the wolds of Bradigus.  Her deadly Skin and Moans destroyed a Wold Guardian and her Dread Rots tied up another.  Finally, her Rattler neutralized the remaining Dawnguard.

Bradigus, seeing himself alone against two foes, saw Sorscha in a new light – eliminating her meant her warjacks would go inert and might buy him the time he needed against the Child.  He sent the Woldwyrd against Sorscha first, and then attacked her directly with his own considerable magical attacks.  When he was done, the ground itself was shattered, and Sorscha was broken.  He then turned his attention to the Grymkin, using his larger Wold Guardians and Woldwarden to clear out the Dread Rots and eliminated the Child’s biggest threat, the powerful Skin and Moans.

The maneuver left Bradigus exposed though, and the Child was able to capitalize on the mistake, burying him under a hail of blows from her considerable fists.  With the enemy army dealt with, the Grymkin retrieved the dispelling rune from Taramathis’s notes and moved on.
