Yesterday, I spent a fair amount of time working on my Warhammer army: gluing swords and guns, swapping arms, arranging units, and generally putting my collection of models into a legal army. The upshot of all of this is that, for me at least, I finally feel like my army is coming together, I have a pretty good feel for what I have, and a good idea of what I would like to get. The downside is I’m out of right hands/arms and I still have stuff to do (in particular, that blood claw biker over there missing a right arm).
At any rate, to solidify what I’ve got and what I want to eventually get, here is my annotated army list (full PDF generated by my database to come later).
Troops:
2 squads of Blood Claws and 2 squads of Grey Hunters
Yellow/Red Blood Claws: This is a squad with the shoulder and knee pads painted yellow and red, with 1 power weapon, 1 power fist, 1 plasma pistol, and a flamer; it is also lead by a Wolf Guard Leader. This squad is mostly complete, a couple of the models need paint (including the flamer which is still just base coated), but there’s one other major snag – five of the models have bolters instead of bolt pistols! What I’d like to do is move them to a Grey Hunters squad and replace them, but for now, I’ll just be treating those as bolt pistols. The Wolf Guard Leader is technically wielding a power fist and a close combat weapon, which I would like to change out for a bolt pistol, but I feel this is somewhat minor for now.
Yellow/Blue Blood Claws: This is basically the same as the Yellow/Red Blood Claws with a meltagun instead of a flamer, and (obviously) different colors on the shoulder pads. This squad is not painted at all, and a couple of the models are missing shoulder pads, but other than that, it’s ready to field. Same deal with the Wolf Guard Leader, actually, which is why it’s at least stable for the time being.
Black/Red Grey Hunters: Grey hunters with Bolters and close combat weapons, 1 power weapon, 1 power fist, 1 plasma pistol, and 1 flamer; also lead by a wolf guard leader. This squad is done, it’s even painted!
Black/Blue Grey Hunters: Similar in composition to Black/Red Grey Hunters (with a meltagun instead of a flamer), but similar in shape to the Yellow/Blue Blood Claws – not painted, a couple missing shoulder pads, but otherwise ready to go.
What’s left: I’ve got a handful of Blood Claws and Grey Hunters left as well as another Wolf Guard Leader, all missing shoulder pads. What I’d like to do on my next modding day is put shoulder pads on all of the Blood Claws and move them into the Yellow/Red squad replacing the guys with bolters. Then, moving the guys with bolters to a new Grey Hunters squad (adding power fists and power weapons along the way) with the remaining Wolf Guard Leader. I could, if pressed, put together the last Grey Hunters squad without modification, but for me, the details matter.
Dedicated Transport:
1 Rhino: Not painted or even based, though, in theory, ready to go.
Heavy Support:
1 squad of Long Fangs, Leman Russ Exterminator, and Land Raider
White/Black Long Fangs: Standard fair – leader with power weapon, Long Fangs with bolter, lascannon, missile launcher, plasma cannon, and heavy bolter. Painted, and ready to go!
Leman Russ: Twin-linked autocannon, lascannon, heavy bolter pair – painted and ready to go!
Land Raider: I’ll be honest, I haven’t specced this out yet. It’s based, but not fully painted yet (to be honest, I’ll probably just base it again, do some details, and call it good), but otherwise ready to go.
What’s left: I have another Long Fang with missile launcher and another long fang leader (with plasma gun) which I’d like to fill out into a full squad (read: Buy some long fangs – plasma cannon, lascannon, and multi-melta). I also have a placement which is a long fang with twin-linked multi-melta. I haven’t put a cost on him yet, only because he’s likely mission specific (but fun to have around). I feel that I really need one more full long fang squad when I’m ready to shell out $40, but it’ll hold until then.
Fast Attack:
Land Speeder, 1 squad of Blood Claw Bikers, and 2 squads of Blood Claw Jump Packs.
Land Speeder: Heavy bolter – all painted and ready to go!
Blood Claw Bikers: 4 bikers (1 meltagun and 1 power weapon) and an attack bike (with multi-melta). This group is mostly painted (shoulder pads need some work), but the guy with the meltagun is missing an arm. Also, I’d really like to add or swap out to get a guy with a plasma gun in there, but we’ll see.
Yellow/Red Blood Claws Jump Pack: 6 Blood Claws with jump packs (1 power weapon and one plasma pistol). This squad went through a bit of work yesterday as it had too many plasma pistols and one character had lighning claws. As you can imagine, arms went all over the place (including to get plasma pistols for the other Blood Claws squads). Not sure what I’m going to do with the Lightning Claws yet, but I’m open to suggestions. This squad is currently painted black with white shoulder pads – I’m going to totally revamp this scheme to make them have yellow and red shoulder pads and probably use Space Wolf grey for their power armor (to contrast the shadow grey used on the Yellow/Red Blood Claws).
Yellow/Blue Blood Claws Jump Pack: Similar to the above with a power fist instead of a power weapon. This squad underwent the most work yesterday – all the power weapons (5) were turned into regular chain swords, with some of the power weapons going to other squads, while the rest went into my bits bag.
What’s Left: I don’t have any other models left here (which is pretty good), though I would like to beef up each of the squads just a little bit, and/or have a few more models to allow swapping out of various equipment as the situation demands (mostly for the jump packs, since they’re a little less expensive).
Elites:
1 Dreadnought, 1 Venerable Dreadnought, and 1 squad of Wolf Scouts
Dreadnought: This is the Dreadnought from the Black Reach box, not even based or glued to his base yet, so he needs some work before fielding.
Venerable Dreadnought: My Uncle Clayton put this one together – It’s got extra-long fingers on the Dreadnought close combat weapon and an Assault Cannon. One of the fingers broke off in shipping and I’m working on a new one, but other than that, looks awesome!
Wolf Scouts 1: 5 Wolf Scouts (1 power weapon, 2 plasma pistols, and 1 plasma gun). This group is fully painted and ready to go, but I think really needs an extra scout without any goodies. I don’t have one of these, so it’s very high on my list.
What’s Left: Unfortunately, there’s a lot left here – I have two more Wolf Scouts (one with meltagun and one with plasma gun) which don’t really fit. I also just got a pair of Wolf Scouts with sniper rifles, so I’m planning on getting three Wolf Scouts without anything extra (1 for the squad above, two more for another squad) and a Wolf Scout Sergeant to make another squad.
HQ:
Lots
Grimnar: My favorite of the special characters I have – beautifully painted and really ready to go. I’ve currently got him in a squad with 4 Wolf Guard Bodyguard in terminator armor, one with thunder hammer and storm shield. I’d like to get another thunder hammer/storm shield combination for another (unpainted) Wolf Guard in that group, but it’s somewhat low priority. There’s only one unpainted Wolf Guard in the group, so when I get that done, this squad will be ready to see some action.
Ragnar: I’ve Ragnar with 4 Wolf Guard Bodyguard in terminator armor, this group very focused on charging into battle. I’ve got two Wolf Guard with flamers and two with chainfist, all painted up and ready to go.
Wolf Guard Battle Leader: I’m working on this squad being more ranged focused than melee focused – currently it has 3 Wolf Guard in terminator armor, all with storm bolters. The entire squad is unpainted and needs to be glued down. I have in the works to replace the storm bolters on two of them with assault cannons.
Ulrik: Ulrik has the 3 Fenrisan Wolves that I currently have in the army as retinue, all are awesomely painted.
2 Wolf Lords, 2 Rune Priests (one in terminator armor), 1 Iron Priest (with thrall), 1 Wolf Priest: All awesomely painted and ready to go!
What’s Left: No models left, of course, though I sometimes feel like I have too many HQs to field, even in an apocalypse sized battle. Still, if the game is being played without named characters, or I need something in particular, I have lots of options, which is always a plus.
