Warmachine Journeyman – Week 1

The Journeyman league finished up its first week last weekend, and I had a ton of fun.  We decided to do two-week blocks so that there would be more time to play games and get some painting in.  So far, I managed to get in 3 games with an overall record of 0 and 3.  Hopefully the second half of week 1 treats me better – all the gory details after the fold.

My first game was against Oliver, playing the Legion of Everblight:

Daniel’s Rhulic Mercs (0 pts)

  • General Ossrum (28 WJpts)
    • Ghordson Driller (10 pts)
    • Grundback Gunner (6 pts)
    • Grundback Gunner (6 pts)
    • Grundback Blaster (6 pts)

Oliver’s Legion of Everblight (0 pts)

  • Kryssa, Conviction of Everblight (31 WBpts)
    • Nephilim Bolt Thrower (11 pts)
    • Shredder (4 pts)
    • Shredder (4 pts)
    • Neraph (12 pts)
VS

This game went fairly well to start, with us both getting some upkeep spells on the field and moving our guys up.  What I didn’t expect on turn two, was Oliver to fly his Neraph way behind my line with two fury on it.  It was out of his control area, so it was definitely going to have to make a threshold check, and likely frenzy against General Ossrum.  My only move, then, was to move up far enough and try to do as much damage as possible.  I don’t know whether it was good luck or bad, but the Neraph did frenzy, but didn’t really do enough damage to Ossrum to take him out.  However, Kryssa was going to go for the assassination, and every little bit counts.  While Kryssa’s assassination failed, so did Ossrum’s – there just wasn’t enough focus to make it work!  Kryssa fixed her Rhulic problem the following round though – 0 and 1!

Next I played Keagan and his Cygnar:

Daniel’s Rhulic Mercs (0 pts)

  • General Ossrum (28 WJpts)
    • Ghordson Driller (10 pts)
    • Grundback Gunner (6 pts)
    • Grundback Gunner (6 pts)
    • Grundback Blaster (6 pts)

Keagan’s Cygnar (0 pts)

  • Major Beth Maddox (30 WJpts)
    • Ironclad (12 pts)
    • Lancer (10 pts)
    • Firefly (8 pts)
VS

Nothing about this game went well, but I certainly learned about the power of the other battle boxes.  While the shooting power of my Gun Bunnies is good, the shooting power of Cygnar is better, and Keagan was definitely able to execute.  Every maintenance phase, I was dealing with disruption (from Beth’s Electrical Blast), knockdown (from the Ironclad’s Tremor special attack), or electrical bouncing (from the Firefly).  There simply wasn’t enough focus to go around, and the dwarves just folded like tissue paper – 0 and 2!

My last game from day one was against Ian’s Cryx:

Daniel’s Rhulic Mercs (0 pts)

  • General Ossrum (28 WJpts)
    • Ghordson Driller (10 pts)
    • Grundback Gunner (6 pts)
    • Grundback Gunner (6 pts)
    • Grundback Blaster (6 pts)

Ian’s Cryx (0 pts)

  • Bane Witch Agathia (29 WJpts)
    • Reaper (13 pts)
    • Slayer (10 pts)
    • Deathripper (6 pts)
VS

This game was interestingly tactical.  Ian feated turn 1, forcing me to get within 5″ to actually shoot…  …I decided that I would go ahead and feat, giving me +3 movement and going ahead and engaging.  It was a pretty crazy fight, but after all the warjacks finished punching each other, both casters were still standing and there was a nice charge lane for Agathia – so Ian obviously went in for the assassination.  I realized then, that it was still my feat turn, and I should have more ‘jacks on the field since they had +3 ARM…  …But it was too late for that and Agathia was able to execute General Ossrum – 0 and 3!
